Lieutenant Antoni BASZKOWSKI died in Gdańsk
On December 29, 2010, Lieutenant Antoni BASZKOWSKI, an officer of the 17th Greater Poland Uhlans Regiment, died in Gdańsk.
Antoni Baszkowski was born on November 11, 1915 in Turek. He was a graduate of the Reserve Cavalry Officer Cadet School in Grudziądz, class X (1935-1936). In August 1939, he was mobilized to the Reserve Center of the Greater Poland Cavalry Brigade. In the September campaign, he fought in the 17th Greater Poland Uhlan Regiment. He was imprisoned in a POW camp in Szepietówka (USSR) and a POW camp in Germany. In 1940, after returning to Poland, he joined the Union of Armed Struggle. In March 1941, he was warned of arrest by the Gestapo and escaped to the General Government. In the underground AK, he took the name Władysław Rapacki. He was seriously ill with lung disease. He took part in the Warsaw Uprising with his wife Aleksandra. After the defeat of the Warsaw Uprising, he and his wife were deported to Germany.
After the war, he lived with his family in Turek. He was an active member of the World Association of Home Army Soldiers. For many years, he and his wife Aleksandra came to Grudziądz for the Cavalrymen's Congresses of the Second Polish Republic. He was a member of the Council of the Foundation for the Tradition of Polish Cavalry. He had the Foundation's Honorary Badge
