Obituary - The Richmond News Leader (Richmond, Virginia), January 7, 1961:


ALLEN—Departed this life at his residence Route No. 1. Chester, Va. Wednesday, January 4th, 1961

Mr. John R. Allen. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Edna Chamberlayne, Mrs. Margie Watson. Mrs. Emma Glenn, and Mrs. Gracie Griffin; two sons, Mr. Louis and Daniel Allen, two sisters, Miss Lillie Mae Allen, and Mrs. Rebecca Lane; one brother. Mr. Thomas Allen, 23 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two daughters-in-law, four sons-in-law, one aunt, one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends. The funeral services will be held Sunday January 8th 3 P.M. from the Chester A.M.E. Zion Church, Chester, Va. Rev. Mathew Hatcher, pastor officiating, interment in Lively Cemetery. The remains are resting at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull St. Relatives and friends attending funeral services please assemble at the residence Sunday 2:15 P.M.
