Henry (or Johann Heinrich) Rehg was born in Kirchheim, Rhein-Pfalz, Germany, son of Johann Melchior Rehg & Johana J. Elisabeta Hammel. He married Mary (Maria Sussanna) Kraus on 19 Feb 1817 in Dirmstein, Germany. In 1847 the couple and eight surviving children emigrated to the US on the ship Middlesex, going from Le Havre to New Orleans and arriving 19 Jul 1847. The family made its way up to St. Louis and then settled in St. Clair Co., IL. During his youth, Henry is said to have served in Napoleon I's army for five years. He was thereafter a farmer.
