William Wills, mayor of Globe, and chairman of the Gila county Democratic central committee, died at his home here this morning, at 2:30 o'clock following an illness of more than three years. Although he had been in ill health for some time the end came unexpectedly following a hemorrhage. Funeral services will be held here Sunday afternoon.
At the time of his death, Mr. Wills was serving his second term as mayor of Globe. He was re-elected to the post of May of this year while he was confined to his bed and too ill to conduct a campaign. He was first elected mayor of the city in 1926 after having served two terms as alderman from the fourth ward.
He was born in Cornwall, England, December 24, 1872 and would have been 56 years of age on his next birthday. He came to America 30 years ago and located in Gila County after his arrival. For a number of years, he was connected with the Old Dominion Copper company. Early in his residence here, he became prominent in union circles and was elected secretary of the miners' union.
He was interested in a number of business enterprises in Globe and at the time of his death was engaged in the real estate business. As mayor of the city, he urged the replacement of all wooden bridges in the city with new ones, and worked tirelessly for the paving of the city streets. He also was an ardent supporter of the McCormack wash flood control. During his regime as mayor, he was responsible for improvements to the water works system and the reduction of the water rates as well as the reduction of fire insurance rates.
At the time of his death, he was secretary of the miners' union in Globe, past grand master of the Odd Fellows' Lodge, past president of the Fraternal Brotherhood, and a member of the Fraternal Mystic Circle. He also served as a trustee of St. Paul's Methodist church for many years.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rose Celia Wills, a daughter, Mrs. Ida Wearne, one son, John Wills, one brother, James Wills and two sisters, Mrs. W.P. Oates and Mrs. Mary Clements, all of Globe; a brother Joseph Wills of Michigan, and two sisters living in England. A number of nieces and nephews in Globe also survive.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from St. Paul's Methodist church here. The remains will be laid to rest in the Odd Fellows' plot in the Globe cemetery.
