Born Elisha. He was secretary to John Berkeley, 1st Baron Berkeley of Stratton when he was Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland in 1670 and British Ambassador to France in 1675. Brother of Dr. Robert Leighton and son of Alexander Leighton, a Scottish medical doctor, puritan preacher and pamphleteer, best known for his 1630 pamphlet that attacked the Anglican church and which led to his torture by King Charles I. He was the brother of Dr. Robert Leighton.
