Katherine Fauss was born in Herschweiler, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany in 1852, to Jacob Fauss and Wilhelmina 'Minnie' Hennemann. In August of 1854 at the age of two, she immigrated into the U.S. and settled on a farm near Lowell, Ohio with her siblings and parents. About 1859, her family moved across the Ohio River to 119 acres of forested land in Wood County, near Sand Hill, purchased by her father Jacob.

Katherine died as a teenager on June 4, 1869, and is buried at the Sand Hill Cemetery, next to the church that her parents help build. Katherine had 8 siblings: Jacob, born 1844 in Germany; Lewis G., born 1845 in Germany; Caroline 'Carrie', born 1848 in Germany; Charles 'Carl', born 1850 in Germany; Wilhelmina, born 1854 in Ohio; Daniel W., born 1854 in Ohio; Mary, born 1860 in West Virginia; and Christian, born 1863 in West Virginia.
