John Richard Layer, 74, of Johnson City, Tenn., and formerly of Terre Haute, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, in Shelby County, Ky., the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a Field Superintendent with the Daniels Co.

He was born Jan. 4, 1931, in Wayne County, Mich., to Floyd Layer and Foster Pratt Layer, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Valyndia C. Layer.

Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Fagg Layer, whom he married June 12, 1954; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Gina Layer of Terre Haute and Daniel and Deborah Layer of Johnson City; one sister, Patricia Heinz of Austria; one brother, Floyd Layer Jr., of Terre Haute; one aunt, Martena Layer; and seven grandchildren, Jacob Layer, Kamee Wilson and her husband Destry, Nathan Layer, Christopher Layer, Joshua Layer, Joseph Layer and Courtney Layer. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, James Edward Layer and Jack Layer.

He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Johnson City, Central Masonic Lodge 541 in Brazil and Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday in Callahan Funeral Home at 2425 Wabash Ave., with Dr. Reggie Weems officiating. Burial is in Highland Lawn Cemetery. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. today, with Masonic services at 7.
