Gordon Carl Hoffeld was born and raised in the Edgemere area of Baltimore City. His father and mother divorced when he was in the eighth grade and he had to quit school to support his mother. He owned and operated a 'Crown' Service Station at the intersection of Old Joppa Rd and what is now I-695. While growing up, Gordon had snow white hair until about age 13. The kids in the neighborhood nicknamed him 'Whitey" and the name followed him to his grave. He ran unsuccessfully for City Council in Daytona Beach in 1966 and was a supporter of trying to bring Disney World to Daytona. He owned and operated "Whitey's 66 Service Station" first at the corner of Main St. and Peninsula (across from Pinewood Cemetery and the Boot Hill Saloon)and then moved to Broadway (US92) and Peninsula in 1971.
