Cumberland Times-News
LONACONING — John R. Schriver, 65, of Lonaconing, passed from this life to a greater life beyond on Sunday, July 12, 2009. We choose not to say he lost his fight. He was truly a winner. What an amazing battle he fought for two and a half years with brain cancer (GBM). John showed true strength during his illness with his faith in the Lord.
He was born April 11, 1944, to the late Clarence and Mary (Beeman) Schriver. John was raised in the Moscow-Barton area.
He retired from the United States Postal Service, having worked in the Lonaconing office. He attended the First Assembly of God Church in Lonaconing. John served in the United States Army. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 172, a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 638, a member of Victory Post 155 American Legion, Westernport, the Lonaconing Republican Club and the Jackson Run Sportsmen Club. Before John's illness, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and horse shoe player and loved to read.
He leaves behind his wife, Sandi (Coleman) Schriver; a son, John T. Schriver and wife Anita, of Lonaconing; a daughter, Ashley N. Schriver, at home; two granddaughters, whom John loved dearly, Sydney Marie and Layney Rene Schriver; two brothers, Tommy Schriver and wife Sandy, of Westminster, and Bobby Schriver and wife Venus, of Nebraska; four sisters, Blanche Matthews, Mary Lee, Judy Metts and husband Mark, and Carolyn Hughes and husband Rickie, all of this area. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Tom Coleman and wife Patricia, of Midland, and Dan Coleman and wife Jen, of Sydney, Australia; two sisters-in-law, Brenda J. Poland, of Keyser, W.Va., and Gloria Whitehead, of Midlothian; and a very special cousin to John, Edna (Beeman) Clark.
The family will receive friends at the Boal Memorial Chapel, Barton, on Friday, July 17, from 6 to 9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted in the First Assembly of God Church, Lonaconing, on Saturday, July 18, at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Greg George and the Rev. Fred Sloan, who has been a kind and wonderful friend to John, officiating.
Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Moscow Mills, with full military honors accorded at graveside by Vietnam Veterans Chapter 172.
Pallbearers will be Joe Robertson, John Kirkwood, J.R. Metz, Brian Moses, Terry Meyers, Brian Bean, Steve Keller, and Tom Shockey, all close friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of John to the First Assembly of God Missionary Fund, 17222 Assembly Lane, Lonaconing, MD. 21539.
We wish to thank everyone who kept John in their prayers and the kindness shown to him during his illness. John had a kind and loving nature and will be dearly missed.
A very special thank you to Kenny and Faye Smith for their prayers, kindness and support. May the Lord continue to bless them.
Special thanks to Home Hospice and Barbara White for her caring and kindness with John and also Home Health Aids and their kindness.
John 11:25. I am the resurrection and the life, he who believes in me will live even though he dies.
