He was born May 21, 1920 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and attended school in Norfolk, Nebraska before entering the University of Nebraska. He was accepted as an Army Air Corps Flying Cadet, commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, and joined a newly formed P-38 Fighter Group in the Fifth Air Force, participating in air offensives against the Japanese in New Guinea, New Britain, the Halmaharas, the Philippines, Taiwan, mainland China, Okinawa and Korea. He flew over 300 combat missions, scored 11 aerial victories, and was promoted to Lt. Colonel.
Returning home, he married Rachel Hultman in West Point, Nebraska, received a regular commission in the Air Force, and returned to college for his B.S. He served with the Minnesota National Guard, Air Defense Headquarters, was promoted to full Colonel and took command of a Fighter Bomber Group flying F-84's in the Korean conflict. Back again in the U.S., John commanded an F-86H Fighter Group, and was Deputy Comm-ander of an F-100 Tactical Fighter Wing. He had duty tours at the Pentagon and the Operations Staff at the Pacific Air Forces in Hawaii, followed by an assignment as Air Force Senior Advisor to the Indiana Air National Guard. He retired from the Air Force in 1970, with 5400 hours of military flying time. His decorations and medals include the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Three Oak Leaf Clusters, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal with Eleven Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal and the Republic of Korea Ulchi with the Silver Star.
John returned to North Texas University for his Master's, and taught high school physics at Plano Senior High School. John served as the Grand Marshal for the 2007 Dallas Veterans Day Parade. His memberships included the American Fighter Aces Association, the P-38 Fighter National Association, and the Order of Daedalians.
John was preceded in death by his son, John S. Loisel, Jr., his grandfather Joseph Loisel, his grandmother Emma Loisel and young brother Justin Joseph Loisel
He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Rae; daughter and son-in-law, Robert and Susan Bryan; grandchildren Eric and Sally Loisel, Patrick and Anne Mooney, Chris Loisel, and their mother Maribess Powell; four great-grandchildren; two sisters and numerous friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 am, Friday, January 29, 2010, at St. Mark's Evangelical Church in Plano. Internment will follow at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
