William Aaron "W. A." Carroll was born May 29, 1887 in Richhill Township, Greene County, Pennsylvania, the second of three children of Joseph Seaman Carroll, (1874 – 1927), and Rebecca "Becky" (Owen) Carroll, (1851 – 1928). Within a few years, after his birth, the family relocated to Wetzel County, West Virginia where he met Elizabeth Pearl Jackson. They were married in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia on June 24, 1914 and took up housekeeping in Washington, Pennsylvania where the first three of their nine children were born. "W.A." worked for the T. H. Southerland Garage as a mechanic until the early 1920's when he purchased a Chevrolet franchise which he owned and operated at the Northeast corner of Main Street and Petroleum Avenues until his death on, January 19, 1958, from a heart attack suffered in his Claysville home (105 Petroleum Avenue).
His obituary from The Washington Observer on January 20, 1958 states: "Mr. Carroll was a member of Claysville Lodge No. 447, F. & A. M.; Eltor Grotto, Wheeling, W. Va.; Claysville Presbyterian Church; Weimaraner Club of America and Claysville Lions Club. He served as school director in Claysville 15 years and was a civil aviator over 30 years. He was known in the district as an ardent hunter and outdoor sportsman."
