Rudolph Richard Palombit, age 82, of Niceville, Fla., passed away quietly at his home on May 5, 2010.
He was born on May 5, 1928, in Detroit to Oswald and Dora Palombit. Rudolph enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1945, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was recalled to service for the Korean War and honorably discharged in 1951. In the 50's he worked for Gilfillan Brothers Inc., where he trained personnel in radar air traffic control systems for the Royal Dutch Navy and the Belgian Air Force. Subsequently, he worked as a test engineer for Raytheon Corp. for 30 years at the White Sands Missile Range in Alamogordo, N.M. He was a member of the teams that developed the Hawk and Patriot surface-to-air missiles, as well as the AMRAAM air-to-air missile system. Rudolph also worked at Eglin Air Force Base before retiring to Niceville in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Palombit, whom he married at Hamilton Air Force Base on Aug. 29, 1951; five children and their spouses, Rudy and Paula of Tampa, Fla., Randy and Barbara of Lubbock, Texas, Robin and Richard Woodbridge, Va., Robert and Patricia of Providence Village, Texas, and Ryne and Kristin of Plainsboro, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
