J. S. Woodward was born in the town of Antwerp, in the year 1839, the son of Allen and Susan Woodward.
He enlisted under the first call in the spring of 1861, in Company C, 35th N.Y. Volunteers. Mustered with the regiment, and mustered out with it.

They have reared two children, a daughter and a son. He is now living, and has been for the past 40 years, on what is known as the Fuller road, in the town of Antwerp. His occupation is that of a farmer.

Death of James Spencer Woodward. Gouverneur, June 15.—The death of James Spencer Woodward, one of Spragueville's oldest and most highly respected residents occurred at that place at 9 p. m. Thursday night following an illness of nearly three months. He was born in the town of Antwerp, N.Y, July, 15, 1839, the son of the late Allan and Susan Blodgett Woodward, who were early settlers of that town. He received his early education in the schools of that town and at the outbreak of the Civil war he enlisted in the 35th. Reg. N. Y. Vol. in Company C and served throughout .the war. ( He was always in the politics of his district and at the time of his death he held the office of overseer of the poor in the town of Rossie. He was a member of the Oliver McAllister Post G. A. R. of Antwerp, also a member of the Indian River grange and Master of the Pomona grange of Jefferson county. He also belonged to the Methodist church at Spragueville. Besides his widow Tmnie L. Bacon, he is survived by one son Claude S. Woodward of Spragueville and by five grand children, also by three brothers, Andrew J. Woodward of Antwerp, and Henry and Charles Woodward of Lyndan, Kansas. One sister, Mrs. Oliver A. Taitt, of Spragueville, also survive. The funeral will be held from the home at Spragueville Sunday afternoon at 1 p. m., the Rev. B. A. Walton pastor of the Methodist church of that village officiating. The Masonic body .from Lodge 226 F. & A. M. of Antwerp will have charge of the burial services at the Antwerp cemetery.
