St. Clair Soldier Killed In Action

St. Clair, July 11 -- Pvt. Robert Shirkey, 20, son of Francis Shirkey, 738 North Ninth street, has been declared killed in action in France, his father was officially notified in a War department telegram Tuesday. He had been reported missing in action Aug. 9, 1944.

He was inducted into the Army July 8, 1943, and took medical corps training at Providence college, Providence, R. I., and Camp Grant, Ill., before going overseas in May, 1944. He received further training in England until July, 1944, when he went to France for service at (sp.) a stretcher-bearer.

Private Shirkey was born March 8, 1925, and was graduated from St. Clair High school in 1943. He is survived by his father, two sisters, Nancy Shirkey and Donna Shirkey and his maternal grandfather, John Reid, all of St. Clair.
