On September 27, 1914, the 2nd Battalion was actively engaged in France along the Aisne front during the First World War. As part of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, they were locked in early trench warfare and consolidation operations following the fierce Battle of the Aisne. William survived just 16 days on the Western Front.
