JAMES GILBERT MALONE

Born Aug. 13, 1899, Austin, Minn. Son of Mrs. W. D. Baker. Previous military training, 6 months Montana Calvary on Mexican border. Occupation, laborer. Residence, Brownsdale, Minn. Entered service March 13, 1917, at Ft. Francis, Ontario, Canada, in the infantry. Assigned to Co. B 141st Battalion. Trained at Port Arthur. Transferred to Co. A, 44th Battalion. Embarked from Halifax April 29 1917, and arrived at Liverpool May 6. Killed by shrapnel during an attack near Lens., Aug. 23, 1917. At dawn on the morning of Aug. 23rd, an attack was launched on a very strong enemy position. In this attack Gilbert was engaged in reaching the objective of the attack and was repelling counter-attacks in a bombing post in the new advanced position, when he was instantly killed by splinters from a shell, receiving wounds in head, arms and legs. The body was buried in the battlefield where he fell.
