The son of Thomas Sharp & Hannah (Lowe) Barton, in 1860 he was a laborer/farmer presumably living in Chanceford Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 5" tall and had sandy hair and brown eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of twenty-one in York August 7, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 9 as a private with Co. I, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Hospitalized in Philadelphia November 16, 1862 - January 1863, he returned to duty and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863.
After the war, he moved to Morgan County, Ohio. He married Angie Elizabeth Winter and fathered Maggie May (b. 04/24/78 - married Louis A. Kobler), Pearl Millie (b. 01/21/79 - married a Brill), Charles Wesley (b. 11/01/84 - "helpless child"), and Ira Hannah (b. 11/02/86 - married a Reynolds). After Angie's death in 1889, he married divorcée Cora May Danielson, née Miller, and fathered Schley Wellington "Sly" (b. 09/02/98), Leroy Edward "Roy" (b. 08/07/04), and twins Dorothy (b. 10/27/07 - married Vernon Mosher) & Lenora - married John Lees). On September 5, 1911, THomas entered the Battle Mountain Soldiers' Home in Hot Springs, Fall River County, South Dakota. Cora applied to have him declared a deserter from his family and succeeded in garnishing half his pension. She also filed for divorce, which the Warren County court granted on March 17, 1920. Thomas died in the same town where Cora was living with their twin daughters

He first reported the 1846 date in his pension application but changed to 1844 during a subsequent application after new pension laws permitted pensioners to apply for increases on their 65th, 70th, and 75th birthdays. Cora lived until 1957.
