She was born January 11, 1913 in Topeka, the daughter of David L. Reed and Ila E. (Worst) Reed. The family then moved to Blue Rapids, Kan., for several years and later moved to Leavenworth in 1926.
She was a faithful Christian, active in church affairs until health issues intervened. She helped establish the Free Methodist Church on Wilson Avenue in the 1930's that later moved to 9th Avenue and changed its name to the Wesleyan Church. After the church closed in the 1990's, she attended the Church of the Nazarene and remained a respected elder until her death.
She was married to Adolph E. Reed April 3, 1929. He preceded her in death June 6, 1983. Of that union, nine children were born.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two half-sisters, Marla Dunn-Larkin-Williams of Leavenworth, Loretta Dunn Ready of Salt Lake City, Utah, one half brother, George Dunn of Napa, Ca., and five brothers: Joseph Reed, David L. Reed, Samuel A. Reed, Johnathan Reed, and Benjamin Paul Reed. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Elnora Gardner of Kansas City, Mo., one daughter, Edna Loraine (twin sister of Edward) who died in infancy Oct. 31, 1937, and one son, Richard A. Reed, who passed away Dec. 3, 2004.
Survivors include four daughters: Doris (Roy E.) Baker of Kansas City, Mo., Betty Housworth of Los Angeles, Jean Long of Leavenworth and Rita (Bill) Malotte of Leavenworth. She is also survived by three sons: Edward (Wilma) Reed, Leavenworth, Leonard (Jennean) Reed of Lansing, and Ernest Reed of Basehor. She had 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
