On October 31, 1939 she suffered first and second-degree burns received when her Halloween costume caught fire from a lantern in front of her home. She was treated at Georgia Street Receiving Hospital and died from her injuries on November 3, 1939. At her funeral at Forest Lawn a few days later, her five brothers served as pallbearers while a quartet sang her favorite song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." Her burial shroud was her toga from the role she played in the film The Blue Bird.
