Jack Shirar was quite the athlete in high school and junior college. There were several local newspaper sports articles that included his exploits. He played tackle for the Pasadena Junior College football team, and was a guard on the P.J.C. basketball team. He played pickup basketball in his parents' backyard together with the slightly younger Mack and Jackie Robinson brothers who lived about a mile away.
Jack played the saxophone in the John Muir High School band and the Pasadena Junior College "Bulldog" band. Jack travelled with the "Bulldog" band to Utah and performed in the Mormon Tabernacle.
After graduating from P.J.C, Jack served as a Track Coach at Longfellow Elementary School for many years. He was also a basketball referee. He played 2nd Base on the Post Office baseball team in the "Owl League".
Jack worked as Clerk for the U.S. Post Office in Pasadena, California, and retired from there. He served as Secretary and President of the local chapter of the National Association of Letter Carriers.
Jack also worked in his father's masonry contracting business. He also became an independent masonry contractor, and performed various jobs on on his own following his father's retirement.
Jack was active in the First Friends Church of Pasadena where he met his 1st wife, "Polly" Pickering, whose parents were Friends ministers.

1st Wife: Charlotte Pauline "Polly" Pickering (1914-1969) • Married on 28 Aug 1933, Los Angeles County, California • Became a widower on 26 Dec 1969.
2nd Wife: Maryellen Catherine "Pat" (Kirk) Howe (1915-2005) • Married on 29 Jul 1972, South Pasadena, California.
