William enlisted as a private in the 15th U.S. Infantry on 30 December 1861. He was promoted through the ranks to 1st Lieutenant by the end of the War, and Captain in 1867. He later became Companion #06000 in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), the first post-Civil War veterans' organization, founded by and for officers of the Union Army and Navy.

He was buried in Monument Cemetery, in Philadelphia near Temple University. The cemetery land was "re-purposed" in the 1950s, and any unclaimed grave markers were dumped along the banks of the Delaware River near the Betsy Ross Bridge. Capt. Heilman's marker rests there today.

Records indicate that his remains were moved with the others to Lawnview Cemetery, and that he is buried near the bronze marker shown here.

(Thanks to Allen Crawford for the image of the original, discarded grave marker. His photographs of this and other markers along the river are found on his Flickr stream.)
