BEN GATES, 56, POPULAR LOCAL BARBER, DIES
Ben L. Gates, 56, well known Emmitt House barber, of 121 So. Lock St., was stricken suddenly with a heart attack at 12:30 p.m. Saturday while walking on his way home from lunch. Mr. Gates was within 50 feet of the residence when his wife saw him fall in the alleyway.
Mr. Gates had owned and managed the Emmitt House Barber Shop for the past 12 years.
Born Aug. 4, 1905, at Lowell, O., he was a son of Alex and Rosa Gates.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Linnie Gates, at home; one son, Leonard Gates, and four brothers, Willard Gates, Saul Gates, Ed Gates and Sanford Gates, all of Zanesville, and four sisters, Mrs. Emma Wallace, of Pennsville, O., Mrs. Mary Cobb, of Belle Valley, O., Mrs. Ruby Clark, of Caldwell, O., and Miss Stella Gates, of Athens.
He was a member of the Waverly Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Boyer Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Brown officiating. Services and burial followed Tuesday in Greenwood Cemetery at Zanesville under the direction of the Boyer Funeral Home of Waverly.
