Although the headstone inscription says James Donald Rogers, his name was actually James Don Rogers. Don was a Scottish baby name which evolved into the English variation of Donald, but in his case, his mother went with Don only, which was more traditional. The inscription of Donald was a mistake. His headstone also gives death date as the 26th of April but the correct date was the 24th of April.

Don was born and raised in Collins, Mississippi. He was the youngest son of Thomas Carter Rogers and D.L.O. Buchanan Rogers. Don was a veteran of WWII where he served in the Army Engineers. He was a very skilled mathematician and engineer and his calculations were so exact that he was assigned to survey and configure many bridges and civil engineering projects, including the Ross Barnett Reservoir.
Don married Christine Yelverton of Taylorsville, Mississippi in December, 1946 and three beautiful children were born to this union- Donna Raye Rogers, James Ronald Rogers, and Richard Steven Rogers.
Don passed away unexpectedly at his home in Lakeland, Florida, where he was living and working at the time. He was laid to rest next to his parents in Salem Cemetery in Covington county, Mississippi.
