From bulletin of St. John's Lutheran Church, Howells, Nebraska

Elizabeth Meyer cam home to final resting place in our St. John's Cemetery which is laid out on a piece of land once belonging to her Farm. It has pleased Almighty God to summon out of this life another pioneer of our St. John congregation, following one who was laid to rest here two weeks ago at almost the identical age and who, by coincidence, was her sister-in-law (Mrs. Maria Meyer, wife of her husband's brother Gerhardt.)

Elizabeth Meyer was born on December 19, 1881, in Hessen, Germany, to Peter Christ and his wife Elizabeth, nee Lange. There she was also baptized in the Lutheran Church, but left soon thereafter with her parents to seek new opportunities in the New World. They settled in this vicinity, and Elizabeth was confirmed in our neighboring Zion's Lutheran Church on March 29, 1896, by the Rev. Otto von Gemmingen, who also united her in marriage with John Henry Meyer on February 13, 1900 (who was born on the date, incidentally, Abraham Lincoln died - April 15, 1865), and they established their home on the Farm just across the road from this church (St. John's) where she lived until after the death of her husband in 1955, when she moved to Columbus, where she established her home with her son Walter. Throughout her life, she had enjoyed fairly good health; although her eyesight began failing her for many years already, she was able to help herself and was in very good spirits to the very end. She had to undergo several surgeries, but was able to shake off the after effects remarkably well, until - while eating breakfast in her home on the morning of June 21 - she suffered a stroke and was rushed to the Lutheran Hospital a few yards away from her home in Columbus, where she never regained consciousness and where she fell asleep quietly at 2:30AM on June 28, 1963 at the age of 81 years, 6 months, 9 days - just 13 days younger than her sister-in-law. Her married life was blessed with eight sons and two daughters, all but one of them (Albert) surviving her. Anna of Gering, Nebraska; Harry of Creston, Nebraska; Raymond and Walter, both of Columbus, Nebraska; Herbert, Professor our Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska; Ellen (Mrs. Joseph Schillingo) of Ridgecrest, California; Erwin of Tilden, Nebraska; Loren of Omaha, Nebraska; and Earl of Howells, Nebraska, who is no living on the Home Place with his wife and child. She is also survived by one brother, seven sisters, 20 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren, as well as by many other more distant mourning relatives. She was preceded into eternity by her husband, one son, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and one brother. Prayer Services were conducted first in Columbus with the Rev. Armin H. Guettler officiating, who had served her faithfully since she moved to Columbus eight years ago, followed by the Funeral Services in our St. John Church on last Monday afternoon with Pastor W.P. von Kuhlberg in charge of these services. Internment was aside her husband and parents in St. John's Cemetery where all now await in peace the summons of that last Great Day!
