Old Women Was Run Down by Street Car In St. Louis
Mrs. Frances Burgess, mother of W. J. Burgess assistant secretary of the Railroad Y.M.C.A. was struck and almost killed instantly by a southbound Bellefontaine car on Florissant avenue, near the gate of Bellefontaine cemetery in St. Louis at 1:45 o'clock Tuesday afternoon.
Mrs. Burgess, who was 69 years old, but unusually active for her age, had left the home of her son, assistant superintendent of the cemetery, just inside the cemetery gate, accompanied by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Irma Burgess, for a shopping tour, when the accident happened.
Mrs. Burgess was a native of Whaplode Grove, Lincolnshire, England and came to America in 1887, with her husband, William J. Burgess of Ipswich, England, a retired artist, who survived her. They settled in Manitoba, Canada, where they spent nine years, coming to Philadelphia in 1896 and to St. Louis five years ago. She is survived by her husband, 80 years of age, and four sons, all married. The sons are: Fred W. Burgess, a manufacturer in Philadelphia; Frances G.Burgess, assistant superintendent at Bellefontaine Cemetery; William J. Burgess, secretary of the R. R. Y. M. C. A., Decatur, Ills.; and George E. Burgess, general secretary of the Y. M. C. A. at North Platte, Neb.
