I started doing genealogy research on my own family tree over 50 years ago. A passion for the hobby quickly developed and still exists today. I love to be able to assist others with their research and thus began my pastime of recording and photographing cemetery headstones. I know from my own experience how cemeteries and headstones can be lost and/or destroyed over time. I also know how the memorials on Find-A-Grave can help unravel family tree mysteries.
Having said all that, I find it important to at least attempt to record accurate information. I also find it important to create memorial pages/records that align with the primary goal of Find-A-Grave – that of working together to find, record and present final disposition information as a virtual cemetery experience.
In an attempt to maintain the integrity of that goal – I do not link my memorials with others that have been created simply to create an online family tree. There are other websites for that purpose. I have seen where several memorial pages have been created for the same individual in hopes that someone else would do the work of finding where that person is actually buried. It's easy to sit at home on a computer and "guess" where someone might be buried, but it's a lot harder drive hundreds of miles and walk trails into the woods and uncover broken, overgrown headstones, or take pictures in 115 degree heat (of which I've done both).
