There are still a number of unknown, unmarked and unregistered pioneer cemeteries and family plots that have not been thoroughly researched. One such place is in a field near the corner of Richards Rd. and Carmel Ridge Rd. in Jackson Twp., Brown Co., IN. According to a neighbor, when his father was young in the early 1900's, no one around knew who was buried in this cemetery. Another family plot is off of Haggard Rd. also in Jackson Twp. The original land owners, the Canatsey and Fesler family members, are buried at East Hill Cemetery. Perhaps, some tenants are buried here. Both cemeteries are likely from the 1820 to 1860 time frame. It is probably time for someone to research, identify, mark and register them.

One fascinating discovery is descent from Jan Janszoon van Haarlem, a Dutch Pirate, Grand Admiral of Salé and Governor of Salé and Oualidia. His second wife was said to be Moroccan. His son Anthony Janszoon van Salee settled in New Netherlands in 1630. This descent is found in one of my paternal ancestral lines: the Van Sickles.

I have an avid interest in archaeology, archaeogenetics, family history, genetic genealogy, phylogeny and segmentology. I'm always looking for information on new breakthroughs. I find funerary art intriguing as well. Other pursuits include arrowhead and fossil hunting, rockhounding and nature walks.

My ancestral families from the Indiana Territory phase, 1800-1816: Barnett, Fleener/Fleenor, Griesemer/Grisamore/Grismore/Crismore, LaFabre/LaFavre/Lafaver/LeFebre, Batdorf/Bottorff/Puttorff/Pottorff/Potteroff, Visinand/Whisenand/Whisnant/Whisenhunt. These families were mainly from France, the Rhineland in Germany and various cantons in Switzerland and settled in Clark, Daviess, Monroe and Washington counties. Some researchers assert that a few members of the Puttorff family ventured into what is now Indiana in the 1790's; the area was then part of the Northwest Territory. This is possible since some of them lived just across the Ohio River in Jefferson Co., Kentucky at that time.

2025 MyHeritage v2.5 results:

English 43.0%, Scottish & Welsh 33.3%, French 4.8%, Dutch 4.6%, Irish 4.3%, Germanic 3.9%, Breton 3.6%, Danish 1.4% and North Italian 1.1%. The North Italian amount is likely from French Huguenot ancestry especially from the Languedoc, Piedmont, Sardinian and Tuscan Waldensian ancestry, southern German and Swiss ancestry and possibly from the Romano-British. Since not much Welsh ancestry has been found, a good guess is that I'm only say 2% Welsh and maybe 31% Scottish. High Confidence Genetic Groups: Midwestern USA #2, Midwestern and Northeastern USA, Southern USA and Kentucky, Missouri, Indiana and Illinois.

2020 FTDNA MyOrigins V3 results: Western Europe 99% - England, Wales, Scotland 81%, Central Europe 11%, Ireland 7%; Magyar less than 1%; Sardinia less than 1%. Magyar locations include: Austria, southern Germany, Hungary, Romania - Banat, Crișana, Transylvania, Serbia and Slovakia.

My Mother's 2025 MyHeritage v2.5 results: Scottish & Welsh 37.6%, English 31.0%, Irish 7.8%, Breton 7.6%, Dutch 6.9%, French 4.2%, Germanic 3.2% and North Italian 1.7%.

My Mother's FTDNA results: England, Wales, Scotland 35%, Central Europe 33%, Ireland 24%, Magyar 6%, Greece and Balkans 2%.

My Father's inferred ethnic background using FTDNA categories and close relatives results: England, Wales, Scotland over 45%; Italian Peninsula, Basque, Sardinia, Amazonian Amerindian and possibly a few others.

French is shown as the closest Single Population Sharing source. The Harappa Civilization existed ≈ 4K YBP. I surmise that the Mediterranean amount is higher than average. Other likely Mediterranean ancestors include the Carthaginians, Luwians, Lydians, Natufians, Phoenicians and possibly the Sea Peoples. My Ancient Eurasia K6 test shows a 37.92% Natufian result.

The HarrapaWorld results of 0.36% American and 0.17% Beringian can be added to result in 0.53% total Native American ancestry. These results correspond with family history about Native American ancestry and likely represents Powhatan, Shawnee and Taino ancestry as well as possibly some Chowan, Croatoan, Hatteras, Roanoke and/or Saponi ancestry. MDLP World 22 results show 0.24% South American; a sibling has 0.52% on this same test. This may possibly be from a small bit of ancient Arawak Amazonian ancestry and correlates with the chance of later Taino heritage. There may also be a connection to the Timucua tribe of northern Florida. Amazonian connections have been found on FTDNA as well. This ancestry is likely through one of the maternal lines in the Fleener family. The West African ancestry is also through one or more of the maternal Fleener lines.

FTDNA Ancient Euro Origins results: Farmer 46%, Hunter-Gatherer 44%, Metal Age Invader 10%. The Invader category is associated with the Yamnaya culture and Y-haplogroup R1b. Since my results show R1b then I am likely a descendant of the Yamnaya. Additionally, the GEDmatch puntDNAL K10 Ancient test shows 43.62% Western Hunter Gatherer.

Not every ancestor in one's genealogic family tree is also in one's genetic family tree. So, you don't inherit genes from every ancestor. MERRIMAN ANCESTRY

My Y-DNA M269 SNP Backbone test results reveal that my Merriman family belongs to: Haplogroup R1b-U152 L2, likely of North Italic origin and possibly Romano-British. FTDNA match results indicate that the most likely subclade is R-FTT12. According to the FTDNA Migration Map, L2 originated somewhere in the vicinity of Tuscany. The Haplogroup Story shows an origin date of 2550 BCE. Results connect to the Curd family of NC and TN. Another result showing the R-FTT12 subclade is for the Sgriccia surname of Preci, Perugia, Umbria, Italy. A more distant connection is to the Da Soler/Soller surname of Treviso, Veneto, Italy. There is a good possibility that the progenitor of my line either came to Britain during Roman times or later during the medieval era. According to histories, Italians from Northern Italy/Lombardy came to London after 1000. They settled in the Lombard Street area and were bankers and merchants. It is unknown exactly when my ancestors arrived. Further SNP testing may help answer this intriguing question. There appear to be DNA connections to Stockport, Manchester, UK; incidentally, Roman legions were once in that area.

New 2026 autosomal DNA results show a possible connection to Merriams of Kent, England and later New England. One wonders if there is a connection to the Italian surname Miriam which is found in Lombardia, Piemonte, Sicilia, Trentino, Veneto and other locations. Y-DNA results are needed from this family.

Some trees show the Merriams in Kent before the thirteenth century but no sources are mentioned. Further research in records such as Alien Subsidies may yield results but the family may have arrived prior to these records. Currently, the origin of the family is an enigma.

DNA results found in 2024 include a match to a descendant of Merrimans from Nottingham, England. This may prove to be a new line of inquiry in tracing the family origins prior to the 16th Century.

Research in 2021 reveals possible genetic ties to the Merrimans of Sandhurst, Berkshire, UK.

Some surnames that likely connect at some point in the past include: Arnau/Arnaud/Arno of France (This may be a Huguenot or Waldensian surname), Baron of France, Baud/Baut, Bibis of Greece - L2 R-FTT12 FTD73814, Doss, Hägi/Hegi/Hickey of Switzerland and  Alsace, France, Moisă of Romania - L2 R-FTT12 FTD73814, Randall/Rendell of England, Spineti of Italy and Zanolari of Switzerland. It is unknown if there is a connection between the Zanolari surname and ancient surnames of Venetia such as Zanni, Zane and Zeno but it is possible.

Possible surname meanings: 1) one who was in the service of a knight or outlaw; 2) one who had a pleasant attitude.

A careful comparison of my results to those of other Merrimans & Merrymans shows that quite a few do not connect through genetic testing.

Interestingly, the picture of John Merryman, III, of Baltimore, MD, (1736-1814), doesn't resemble anyone in my branch. He is separated by a number of generations from Merrimans in Brown Co., Indiana. Limited autosomal DNA may connect his line. However, Y-DNA results are needed from his branch. Thus far, no Y-DNA results have been located unless they belong to I-P222, indicating no relationship.

There is no John Charles Merryman in my line and my branch didn't reside in Maryland. There are a number of erroneous trees out there. Also, most of the early Merrymans did not have middle names.

Additionally, Merrimans from Bledsoe Co., TN also do not connect. Since Y-DNA results from a descendant show up as haplogroup I-P222, then this family doesn't connect to mine. According to trees, this family goes back to Baltimore.

My London Merriman ancestors resided in the older wards of the city and the East End: Aldgate, Aldersgate, Coleman St. and Cripplegate wards, Cheapside, Clerkenwell, Stepney, the Tower Hamlets, Whitechapel. Some of these wards are in the same area as ancient Londinium. In the 1630's James and John Merryman set sail from Gravesend, a port city just east of London. They first settled along the James River in James City Co., Charles City Co., York Co., Virginia Colony. My line continously resided in the James River Valley from 1638 to circa 1804.

Early Zionsville Links

Extensive research has revealed that I am a cousin three different ways to William Zion, the founder and namesake of the town. I'm a 3C5R through the McCormick line. I have two connections through his mother's family, the Fleenors/Fleeners: 2C6R and 2C7R.

My 4th Great-Grandfather, Rev. Jeremiah Featherston, a Baptist minister and orchadist of Southport, was an early investor in the town of Zionsville. According to his will, he owned lots in the town. These were evidently bought between 1852 and 1864.

Jeremiah's granddaughter, Nancy (Ann or M.) Featherston married Pleasant Clingler/Clinger, a Civil War Veteran and resident of Zionsville, in 1867. He was the son of Elijah W. Klingler and Mary E. Stephenson.

Another granddaughter of Jeremiah, Eliza Jane (Featherston) Green Penrose, came to Eagle Village circa 1875. She was the mother of eight children and left a number of descendants in the area.

Fred Gresh, yet another descendant of Jeremiah, was a long time resident of the town and grew dahlias. The town has since come to be known as The Dahlia City.

Additionally, my Great-Grandmother's first husband, Charles Allen Reichard, was born in the Zionsville area in 1864. His father Samuel Reichard was a cooper and steam mill sawyer in the area at that time. The 1860 Census shows the family in the Northfield area. Charles died of a heart condition in 1887 at the age of 23.
