Hello. I got interested in my ancestors & where they are buried when my parents took me to our local family cemetaries in Louisville to visit and put flowers on their graves. And when we visited my grandparents in Knott Co Ky, it was a normal thing to visit our family cemetaries on holidays, clean off the the graves & decorate. As I got older, I was the only grandchild interested in our family tree. My grandfather & I would visit our family cemetaries in his area of Knott Co Ky every time I came to visit. He told me stories of our ancestors all my life. They became real & it seemed normal to visit their grave & document them to honor & respect them. In the late 1990s I tracked down my fathers ancestors in Alton Ind & Ky cemetaries. One cemetary took me 15 years to find. I didnt become an active member of Findagrave until I realized that I knew where abt 300 graves were and that I might be the only person living with this knowledge. I did not get my info from online cemetary lists that hardworking people personally & physically read & worked years to create or claim it as my own hard work. I know a person who does this & its a shame. Its not about numbers & its not a contest. Most of my family ancestors memorials I have created, I researched them by hand without a computer. If I found their grave, I cleaned their stone, got on my knees, introduced myself, promised them they would not be forgotten, thanked them for coming to America, surviving a hard life and said a prayer for them. I love each one. Some memorials I created that are not my personal family, are for my friends family members. Or deceased with my same family name in the same cemetary as my family. So their families can find them & know where they are buried. If they have no decendents to love them, then I will love them. Everyone deserves to be honored, respected & remembered and not lay in a nameless grave.
