I took on a task to help complete information for memorials that connect with families of World War II veterans. Mostly I have focused on Navy sailors, those killed and missing in action during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, but occasionally I come across others when researching a particular veteran surname. It is a journey.
If you are interested you may want to take a look at one of the virtual cemeteries on my profile page, one has really progressed in certain information for USS BUSH DD-529 Sailors Lost. Note: These are not "my" memorials. You might even want to make edits to add accurate information yourself if you are so inclined. My hope is that others may also "adopt" a ship themselves.
The BUSH was sunk by three kamikaze planes in succession while serving on radar picket duty off the coast of Okinawa on April 6, 1945. 87 of her crew were lost. Others had been killed in accidents while serving aboard. So far, for this virtual Cemetery, I managed over time to update their exact full dates of birth, except for two for which I can only find the year. I continue to find the towns where they were born and request edits to add that information. When I can find and connect them to their family member memorials accurately, I request edits to connect the memorial IDs of parents and spouses. Sometimes I come across an obituary to upload. Those who gave all for country should have their Navy rate prefix in their memorial. These sailors worked hard to distinguish themselves in their Navy specialist occupations, and it is right that their memorials show them as veterans and display the Navy rate (rank) they earned.
My reason for doing this is because it gives what I believe is important context to the lives of these sailors. Where did they come from and where did they live before the war? Who were their parents, siblings, wives and children they left behind? How old were they when the enlisted to serve? How old were they when they made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and freedom?
