EDITS: Before sending edits to a memorial with no birth date, please check to see if they are listed in the SSDI, or you can find a death certificate or an obituary easily online. If not and you have access to firsthand information, tell me what you have. Otherwise request a photo or call the cemetery to find it. I resist the urge to follow through on my assumptions based solely on burial location and/or name, and I won't follow through on yours. • Veterans (Separated/Discharged Before Retirement): Individuals who served for a shorter period (e.g., one enlistment) and then honorably separated or were discharged, but did not formally retire, do not typically continue to use their rank as a formal title in civilian life. The Department of Defense does not prescribe usage for non-retired personnel. Their service is generally mentioned as part of their biography or experience (e.g., "John Smith, a U.S. Army veteran") rather than as a name prefix.
