I was born in Chicago, IL, lived in Elgin until I was 4. My parents, Russell T. and Kathryn Nolan Lee moved to my Grandfather's (Thomas E. Lee,Sr) farm ("Lee Farm", now "Cole's Farm") in Bedford County, Va. My grandfather would frequently visit the farm and would take me around the county to visit relatives, both his and those of my Grandmother, Estous Wells Lee. I was inspired by him to remember the family so over the years I collected information and mementos (lots of info). Families mostly focused on were Lee, WellsHardy, Gills, Thurman, Borden, Leftwich, Watts, Poindexter and Lupton. J.T.Lupton got Granddad (his 1st cousin) into the Coca-Cola business at the turn of the century.
My sources consist mainly of (1)a genealogical chart on the descendants of John Lee (1725-1791) who married Alice Richards, both emigrated from England about 1870. My Uncle Thomas E. Lee,Jr. compiled the chart in 1956; (2)"Garrett-Sharpe-Brown-Poindexter and Allied Lines", by Anne Sharpe Garrett Holemann, 1971; (3) Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia and Their Connections", 1931, by Walter Lee Hopkins; (4) Hardesty's 1884 "Personal Histories of Bedford County" and (5) Various volumes of "The Virginia Regimental Histories Series" (H.F.Howard, Inc). Those are just name a few. Lots of logic also comes into play.
2014 was the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of New Market. V.M.I. alumni were asked to volunteer to locate, photograph place flags and record GPS coordinates of the graves for Cadets who participated in the battle. I visited over 40 of the grave sites in all. Most of these sites were known locations, some had the locations wrong and some were unknown. I corrected the locations of three and found 3 more that had never been found by the Alumni Association.
Just recently, I began to actually contribute my stored up information to Find A Grave. So far I've gotten positive responses to my "Suggest Edits". However a few have not responded. I sincerely hope that changes in the very near future. I am very grateful to those who have responded. If I have made any errors, please contact me and I will correct.
