I remember thinking at the family dinner table how hard it was to keep the discussions involving various aunt and uncle so-and-so's straight. How were we related exactly? What did "once removed" mean? Then my grandmother showed me her handwritten chart of our ancestors to explain. It was great, but raised as many questions as it answered!
On a separate occasion, my father responded "I don't remember much about your great grandmothers parents other than they were in the lumber business somewhere in Nova Scotia". So off we went to meet our long lost cousins in Nova Scotia. My father has passed away now, but our little "Genealogy Safari's", like the one to Nova Scotia were most helpful and great fun.
My research (started circa 1999) is online at jhowell.com It consists: 1) A hand picked database of 10,000+ cousins somehow related. Much of the information is from family sources and includes photos, handwritten charts and manuscripts I've obtained from family members. 2) A "Genealogue" documenting the progress of the research.
