PROJECT Part 1(a) : I have set my self a project to trace the initial and final burial locations of U.S service forces (inc American Red Cross Nurses & attached civilians) who died during the Great War and/or were first buried in cemeteries across Great Britain and Ireland - currently I know of 2514 !.
In the 1920's the U.S State authorised the option for families of the Great War (WW1) dead to have their bodies repatriated for home burial of be left where originally buried - currently 2501. Still need to locate graves of 185. Where the locations are know, all but 63 have grave marker images posted. Many of the rest are in isolated cemeteries, or are in cemeteries with no internet contact.
... also documenting U.S Naval deaths & burials and Americans served with British Empire forces and lie in CWGC graves.
Part1 (b) : I am also progressing the 9749 from WW2 or which 5937 were repatriated (3812 lie in Cambridge American Cemetery). Of the 3 primary temporary cemeteries; Brookwood (72 of 3639), Cambridge (91 of 5908) and Lisnabrenny (1 of 148) places of final burial escape me.
Part 2 : Currently working my way through thousands of newspaper archives to try and identify the transport ships that took the U.S dead from Britain (5937) to their final resting places - found 6 vessels so far. I have been told that unlike the WW1 repatriations, where ship's manifests named every individual body as though they were passengers - records for WW2 have either been destroyed or are deep in the archives awaiting scanning. Not sure I can wait ....
Knowing when ships docked at the East coast ports, I am looking for dates of burials to be able to backwards correlate to the ship that "should" have delivered them. If anyone has access to the transport documents, I would be in your debt if you could point me in their direction. Needless to say, that I am updating FG records (Vet flag etc) with what I find.
To summarise. I have been able to compile a reasonably complete list of casualties from British and U.S Records for evenst in Britain. Being 3000+ miles from their final resting places, I would be totally unable to match U.S burial records to that list without the help of FG contributors and the many volunteers that have gone out of their way to track down graves and add photographs to the appropriate memorial pages. A true group effort, in which I am proud to be a part.
