I began contributing to Find a Grave in 2018 after the death of my father-in-law. I had used the site as a genealogy tool for several years before that. I initially used it to add family and friends that have passed away, but then began adding others not known to me personally if I find a grave, or a memorial that hasn't been added. I try to complete as many family links as I can if the information is available. I believe that everyone deserves to be remembered after their time on earth, not only to be remembered, but also to hopefully help others in their search for information about their family and heritage. I add information and photos from different sources, usually published or publicly accessible information and photos. However, I try to be considerate of family wishes, so if a family member wishes to have a memorial, or photo that I've added removed, send me a message with the memorial ID and the reason for removal. This site has provided me with some surprises along the way. I have found friends and coworkers that I had no idea that I was actually related to. Since I am now retired, I hope to have more time to dig deeper into my family history, as well as contribute what I can to link other families together.
I will try and respond to edit requests as soon as possible, however please don't submit edits without some kind of explanation regarding the changes if it can't be verified. I try not to make assumptions about birth and death location, or family connections. If someone lived there, they might not have been born or died in that location, and please look for information regarding family suggestions. If you find a name in a cemetery that is similar to a name on a memorial, please don't make assumptions that they are related. I probably won't accept them unless I can verify the connection.
Regarding adding a spouse, I try and determine the best way to handle that on each request. Some people may not agree, but I usually don't like to add a spouse memorial if it appears that they may have been divorced. Some divorces are very difficult and some family members don't want that connection added to their loved one just because they may have been married before. Exceptions to that is when the obituary explicitly mentions the former spouse as a survivor.
I will usually be happy to transfer management of a memorial if someone asks. Since family members usually have more direct knowledge of accurate family history, I prefer to transfer to family members, but I will usually transfer to someone else when asked with an explanation. However, keep in mind, it is my choice whether to transfer. I have had some questionable requests in the past.
