Joseph Hoffman Bininger was the son of Abraham Bininger Jr. and Catherine Embury both of NYC and was born in the city in 1786. Abraham Jr. was the founder and owner of the A. Bininger & Co., the largest grocery retailer in Maiden Lane in lower Manhattan. Joseph worked in the family business until 1824 after managing the provisioning of bulk merchandise, including grains, produce and fruits from farms in the upper Hudson Valley which were shipped by fast boats to the business in NYC. He returned to NYC in 1824 and started his own company that made harnessing and leather goods for carriage makers in the city from a tanning facility he owned in the "Swamp." He invested in real estate in the city and was able to provide a family legacy after his death in 1861 which lasted until 1920. All of his children except Sara Ann Bininger Hopping are buried in the Bininger plot at Trinity. Sara is buried in the Hopping plot at Trinity across Broadway and located at the foot of the cemetery.
