My father's English ancestors settled in The Hamptons on Long Island, NY in the late 1600s and gradually kept moving west from NY to NJ (many populating Hoppingtown, NJ) to OH (Greene County) and on to Delaware County, IN in the 1840s and eventually to the west coast. Another branch came to America from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany during the American Revolution as a Hessian soldier for England (Pennsylvania Deutsch) and switched sides, believing in the American cause, and fought under George Washington, including to help build a fort at Trenton, NJ. My great grandmother's grandfather, Col. Samuel Williams with Company K of the Indiana 19th Infantry, was a famous Civil War Iron Brigade leader who fought at Gettysburg and died at the Battle of the Wilderness. My mother's ancestors came from Denmark in the 1880s and settled in Cleveland, OH. I have many ancestors who fought in the American Revolution and the War of 1812 and the Civil War (Union side).
