Volunteer gravesite photographer, I assisted with cemetery ground maintenance. I found an article in the El Paso news showing that the Smeltertown Cemetery was to receive a historical marker in 2017 along with 3 others. The other 3 received there's, but this cemetery did not. The crew didn't know about it, and I was asked to chase track it down. To make a long story short; it was lost...? I finally found the team to coordinate getting a new marker to the cemetery. The ceremony took place on October 28, 2023, at the Smeltertown Cemetery, El Paso, TX.

Since I moved to Las Cruces, I started renovation on Barela Cemetery in Las Cruces in July 2023. An assessment was made on what work needed to be done. There were graves hidden / buried in cactus, trash, decades of branches, and debris. This cemetery has been neglected for decades. I see beauty. Work is 2/3 complete with trash removed, infested and overgrown cactus removed, other debris removed and cleared. Graves are now exposed. Sadly, most inscriptions on graves are gone. One gentleman stopped by to help me with the cactus. A company, Metro Mechanics, down the street, saw me struggling with loading cactus in my truck to dump. That company removed the cactus with a backloader and dumped in their extra dumpster. I can't thank them enough. Now, to plan the indigenous landscaping.

I will be leaving NM. My heart is heavy because I can't finish the work I created in my minds eye.
