I've had a penchant for cemeteries since I was young and have always enjoyed gravesite wanderings. So much can be learned by reading inscriptions and visiting gravesites.
Collating my family tree in more detail came about relatively recently over the past decade or so. This coincided with having a little more time to dedicate. My family is wide-spread and varied.
This lead to my gathering of my family memorials. My intention is to be able to pass these findings downwards to future generations. THIS is the very reason I offer to take any photo requests for my more local cemeteries, when I am able, in an effort to help others to do exactly the same thing...find the resting places of their departed ones.
While I manage memorials, ALL of the requests I make are related to my own family tree. I won't request a transfer of management for a memorial unless there is a legitimate connection to my tree. I respect the denial of a transfer of management should the manager be more closely related than I am. I request the same courtesy and dignity in return. I won't deny a management transfer simply because "there may be somebody else out there who is more closely related". Again, I expect the same courtesy in return when I make requests.
It's not about numbers, it's about respect for the families and the departed ones.
My personal view is that memorials are firstly in honour of the memory of the departed, and as a close second, their management should be by those related should they wish or desire. After all, not many people know the dearly departed better.
I don't copy and paste from BDM documents, as they are not always correct. My view is that memorials are to honour the name at the top; as they are an ongoing legacy.
Suggested edits are appreciated. Please state a source or some indication as to where the information can be found, bearing in mind, I won't be delving down rabbit-holes. I have enough of those of my own making. It is your responsibility to verify your information. I'll modify any suggestions that include names of living family members and redact those names as a mark of privacy for the living. FindaGrave requests the same protocol.
I will happily transfer memorials, if you are more closely related to the person than I am. My endeavour is not to collect non-related memorials but rather to 'baby-sit' them temporarily for their closer relatives. FindaGrave guidelines agree with this practice.
My hope is that the work being done here by so many contributors is going to make researching family trees and resting places so very much easier and less complicated for generations to come.
