Mount Peace Cemetery
Lawnside, Camden County, New Jersey, USA
Mount Peace Cemetery is located in Lawnside, New Jersey, originally a borough for free blacks and runaway slaves. The cemetery was established in 1900 as a private nonsectarian burial place for Blacks that were denied burial in all white city cemeteries.
It is thought that at least 125 Civil War veterans, plus soldiers and sailors from the Spanish American War, World War I and II, and Korea are buried here, including Medal of Honor winner John H. Lawson
Unfortunately, a fired destroyed early plot and burial records. A Trust was established in the 1980s and they believe they have found all the Civil War veterans but are still recruiting volunteers to preserve it's legacy and uncover more of its history.
Mt. Peace closed years ago for new burials.
It is one of the few African American sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
