*The majority of the memorials I create are for my relatives.*

•IF YOU'RE A TRANSCRIBER, I've found it best to follow some easy rules: (1) Type out what is on the headstone, not just the years of birth and death. Family members chose those words for a reason. (2) Do not type anything in all caps unless it is the military inscription on a headstone. All caps make it difficult for voice readers. (3) If you're transcribing a photo from a country you're not familiar with, do some quick research and learn how their headstones are arranged. For instance, in Hungary, surnames are put first, so many memorials are backwards because transcribers didn't take a minute to check. (Surnames are often put first on Italian headstones, and "coniugi" is NOT a surname. It means "spouses.") In France, veterans do not get special recognition and should not be given a (v) unless they died in a war. In Québec, women retain their maiden names. (4) If the inscription is in a different language than yours, write it in the language that's on the headstone! A Polish headstone should say Żył(a) Lat #, not Aged # Years. (French: Âge(e) de # ans. Spanish: A los # años.) Google Translate can be your friend. (5) If you can't put in the effort, don't transcribe the photo. Just put it back into the community queue. [I have transcribed photos for 46 U.S. states, 7 Canadian provinces, and 39 countries.]
