Zion Hill Cemetery is owned and operated by the City of Hartford. The cemetery has no phone number and no office on the property. To obtain "Burial Plot" information you must call the City of Hartford, Dept. of Public Works at (860) 757-4951, Monday thru Friday, between 10:00am to 4:00pm. You must provide the deceased person's First and Last Name, and their Date of Death or Date of Burial.
The cemetery's main entrance is located at the corner of Zion and Ward Streets in Hartford, Connecticut. The 24-acre cemetery, in the historic Frog Hill neighborhood, was established in the 1840s on what was then farmland, and was originally known as Zion's Hill Cemetery, one of the most beautiful cemeteries in New England.
The cemetery expanded southward in the early 1900s, and has one of the highest elevations within the City of Hartford. Zion Hill Cemetery also includes several small, independently managed Jewish cemeteries dating back to the 1880s. A now-abandoned red brick building on the property is the historic Deborah Chapel, a Jewish mortuary constructed in 1886 where bodies of the dead were prepared for burial according to Jewish custom. There is also a military cemetery within Zion Hill Cemetery where 201 Civil War soldiers are interred, many of whom died in battle.
