Located on the south side of county road 300 South and west of 500 West, in Union Township. The small hamlet of Buena Vista was once located at this crossroads. It now consists of a few homes but formerly had several others that have since been demolished. The village of Unionport is about a mile to the west on 300 South. Originally in West River Township until Union Township was formed in the 1950's.
Many unmarked burials are here; the earliest known burials are in 1845. The oldest tombstone is that of Thomas Gillum, who died February 9, 1845, aged 66 years. The Buena Vista Christian Church is on the north side of the cemetery. A plat map in the maintenance barn shows owners of many early unmarked graves. The grounds are still used regularly and well maintained.
The original burial site was on the hill at the west end of the current grounds. There was a Friends Church (Quaker) standing about the middle of the grounds, behind the current building. It was built by Thomas Gillum, in about 1850. (This was the date given in Tucker's History of Randolph County, Indiana, and he was using an approximate date. Thomas Gillum died in 1845, so the date was probably 1840).
A second building was erected in 1870 on the site of the present building. It was an effort by several denominations, who used it at various times. The meetinghouse was given into the charge of Popular Run Friends Meeting. Ministers of the Friends denomination came by appointment to conduct services for the community. The Friends Meeting at Buena Vista was disbanded in 1880, and the church was then occupied once a month by the Christians (New Lights). In 1885 the Rev. I. V D. R. Johnson came to organize a Christian church, and 100 persons were entered as charter members. This group continues to worship at the site today. They adopted the name, Buena Vista Congregational Christian Church.
On the afternoon of Thursday, August 11, 2005, during a severe thunderstorm lightning struck the steeple of the church. A fire tore through the roof and destroyed the historic building. By 7 p.m., the building's tin roof had fallen in, and the exterior walls were beginning to bend. Due to the building's age and the amount of wood involved there was little to save the church from destruction. Members salvaged only a handful of items, stacking them among the gravestones. Among them were the pulpit and a Bible on the altar.
A new building, the third at this location, was constructed on the same site as the old edifice. It includes some of the stained glass that was salvaged from the former building.
Every year a Memorial Day service is held in the church; it concludes in the cemetery with local military organizations providing a salute and placing of flags at veteran's graves. During the past few years, the cemetery association has been restoring monuments, resetting fallen stones, painting rusted military flag holders and making new signage for the grounds.
