Established in 1660, Prospect Cemetery is a historic cemetery, thought to be the oldest surviving colonial cemetery in the five boroughs of New York City.
The New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated the cemetery an official City landmark. In 2002, the cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic places.
Recently, the cemetery has fallen into disrepair. The whole place is almost overgrown with plants and many markers have become hidden beneath weeds, making it difficult to locate graves.
As of June 2025, to visit, you must schedule an appointment with the caretaker of the cemetery through York College, on which campus the cemetery is situated and in the care of. You can call the school administrators at York College at their phone number, which is located on their website. To access the cemetery, enter through 159th Street inside the campus of York College. There is a gate between the sign marking the entrance to the cemetery and the Chapel of the Sisters.
