The first newspaper mention of Lockview Cemetery appeared in 1905. By 1908, it was considered an extensive private burial site, well removed from Honolulu and open to all. Because of its distance from the city, burials at the cemetery were few until 1915, when 47 burials took place; the next year, there were 181 burial notices. The cemetery continued to expand.
In 1954, a meeting was held to plan the redevelopment of the Loch View Cemetery. The former Lockview Cemetery in Pearl City, Oahu, was renamed Sunset Memorial Park and classified as a lawn-type cemetery. It was planned to hold about 10,000 interments. Development of the Japanese section began at this time, along with a chapel, mausoleum, columbarium, crematory, and a court of honor. A Cradle or Babyland, a peaceful, walled garden with appropriate statuary, a pool, and a waterfall, was also planned. A design for an entrance gateway was included. A notice was issued regarding the reburial of loved ones to another location to improve the cemetery. In 1956, the bodies of those still remaining were disinterred and reinterred in a section of the cemetery set aside for this purpose.
In 1995, the license expired after the owner died. Thereafter, the cemetery continued to be desecrated and left in a dilapidated state due to vandalism and neglect. Several fires broke out, destroying records and crypts, and vagrants were toppling headstones. Nonprofit organizations and volunteers began managing and repairing the abandoned private cemetery. By 2026, many gravestones were sinking, with signs of groundwater contributing to the problem.
Sunset Memorial Park is a 4-acre cemetery on 4th Street, off Kamehamena Highway, in Pearl City. The names of those buried there were drawn from family knowledge of ancestors, newspaper obituaries, and records in the Hawaii State Archives, though many graves no longer exist.
