The Runyon Family Cemetery is located at the corner of Possumtown Road and Centennial Avenue in Piscataway, New Jersey. It is a small family burial ground. The earliest known burial was Benjamin Runyon in 1785. Many people believe that Vincent Runyon, who died in 1713, is also buried here. Others believe that Vincent Runyon is buried at Stelton Baptist Church. It may be that he was buried at his farm on the Raritan River. No one knows for sure.
All visible gravestones in the cemetery have been photographed and uploaded to the appropriate memorial. Some gravestones that are no longer visible in the cemetery were documented in cemetery inventories and citations to the inventories have been added to those memorials. If a memorial has no gravestone photo or inventory citation, then the memorial was added without any proof of burial.
Below are inventories of known burials in the cemetery:
- History of Union and Middlesex Counties, New Jersey, with Biographical Sketches of Many of Their Pioneers and Prominent Men, Edited by W. Woodford Clayton, Published by Everts and Peck, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1882.
- The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, Volume 16, Number 2, April 1941, Published by the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey, July 1942.
The Township of Piscataway replaced the white picket fence with a black metal fence circa 2019 and maintains the property.
A new sign was installed by a Runyon descendant in 2025. Below is a list of known burials that were not included on either the old or new sign. The gravestones below are not visible in the cemetery but are documented in cemetery inventories:
Samuel Blackford (1761-1851)
Sarah Harris (1796-1804)
Peter Runyon (1743-1820)
Susannah Coriell Runyon (1747-1824)
David Stelle (1816-1819)
Susannah Stelle (1802-1811)
Both the old and new sign mistakenly state that the following people are buried at the Runyon Family Cemetery. They are buried at the Blackford-Clawson Family Cemetery:
Runyon Blackford
Mary Blackford
James Clawson
Issachar Clawson
Walter C. Meuly's "The History of Piscataway Township 1666-1976" has photos of gravestones in the Runyon Family Cemetery and the Blackford-Clawson Family Cemetery on the same page (page 118). It's possible that the person who added the memorials to the Runyon Family Cemetery thought the photos were all from the same cemetery. The Blackford-Clawson memorials are being left here as a placeholder with an explanatory note rather than merged with those at Blackford-Clawson Cemetery. Otherwise, a well-intentioned user would be likely to see the names on the sign and add them back.
