Mount Harmony Cemetery
Greenwood, Sebastian County, Arkansas, USA
Mount Harmony Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries located in South Sebastian County near Greenwood, AR. This cemetery overlooks the beautiful White Oak Valley to the South. It sits on land originally belonging to the Estes family. William A. and Margaret Dunn Estes deeded the land to the Mount Harmony Cemetery Trustees.
There have been about 785 graves identified through genealogical research of journals that were kept by Dr. John Seamans. Also Dr. Seamans worked with the locals who could remember certain burials. At least 55 graves have been identified as soldiers, 26 fought in the Civil War. Only one soul was in the War of 1812.
The first Decoration Day was celebrated Saturday, May 2, 1884, with "singing and dinner on the grounds". This idea became a yearly event, having been created by William Calhoun and Jasper Seamans. Decoration Day continues every year on the 2nd Saturday in May.
The first community school house was built in 1871 & named Estes School. Eventually the school building was moved 100 yards northwest and the first teacher, W. R. Alexander wanted the name changed to Mt Harmony, so the local folks agreed. In 1890 Mt Harmony became the official name of the school and the local Church.
The Mount Harmony Baptist Church is just east on the road a short distance from the Cemetery. Minutes from the early congregations go back to 1912. Oscar M. Stallings preached his first sermon there at age 17 in 1908. He went on to become a well known Reverend of the Baptist faith.
The Cemetery will celebrate its 142nd Decoration Day on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
Trustees Karen Stallings Winters (417-294-2809) and Linda Seamans McGahan (479-461-6142) are available anytime for questions.
