The Mansfield Public Cemetery was established around 1860's.
In 1873 a weatherboard hut was built and gates erected.
The archway was added in 1914 and the toilet block added in 1990.
Some of the tree's found in the Cemetery were donated by Baron Von Mueller from the Melbourne Botanical Gardens in 1870.
There is a Lone Pine in the Lawn section located between Section S and W. Planted as a living memory to those who fought at Gallipoli in the First World War. This Aleppo Pine (Pinus Brutici) originated from a seedling brought back by a serviceman from the original Lone Pine on Gallipoli.
Most burial records dating back to 1860 to 1982 are available at the Mansfield Historical Society, located at the Mansfield Information Centre. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 3pm. All other inquiries are directed to the Mansfield Shire Council, open during normal business hours.
The first burial is said to be Thomas McMahon in February 1865, he was one year old when he died he is buried in Section N.
The Lawn Section was established in 1964. The first burial was of William J Redfern who was a Shire Councillor and actively promoted the preparation of the lawn section, he is in Buried in Section S.
The resting place of the three Police Offices gunned down by Ned Kelly and his gang in 1878.
Sergeant Michael Kennedy, Section Q.
Constable Michael Scanlan, Section P.
Thomas Lonigan, Section M.
There is also a memorial on the round about in the main street of town (High Street) for the offices.
The Cemetery is maintained by Local Council.
Other graves of significance to Mansfield are as following;
Alfred Chenery, was the oldest squatter in Mansfield and acquired Delatite Station, Buried in Section M.
Henry Kitchen, was elected Mansfield's first Shire President, Buried in Section M.
Sisters of Mercy, there are two large gravesites for the nuns who lived and served for most of their lives in the Mansfield District, Buried in Section A and R.
Dr Samuel Reynolds, he moved to the district in 1863 and set up his practice and was widely recognised for his kindness to the poor, he also has a monument dedicated to him in high st. he is Buried in Section Q.
Ewen Tolmie, arrived in Mansfield he acquired Dueran Station and Hollands Creek Run, He is Buried in Section F.
Player Family Headstone is said to be the oldest in the cemetery, you will notice this burial is not in alignment with the other rows. They are in Section M.
