In 1888, Catholic Priest Father Albert Lacombe consecrated this piece of land, establishing the Holy Cross Cemetery.
The Cemetery filled a long time need for those in the area that were of that faith. The N.W.M.P. Field of Honour, enclosed in the white picket fence, contains some of the original members of the North West Mounted Police. Among them, Cst. Edward Drinkwater (Reg. #1233), who was also a veteran of the North West Rebellion. He and two other identified N.W.M.P. members, Sgt. Charles Chasse (Reg. #264) and Cst. Joseph Duquette (Reg. #7937), were laid to rest in this fenced area along with eight members "known only to God". Despite risking lives to move the deceased up from the old island fort site cemetery during spring flooding, many of the original headstones were lost before the caskets could be relocated to their current resting place. Many members of the N.W.M.P., a force respected worldwide, are also buried in family plots, and in the N.W.M.P. Field of Honour in Union Cemetery.
Please use respect when visiting this and other areas of the cemetery.
