Set among the beautiful countryside of North West Norfolk between King's Lynn and Hunstanton is the village of Dersingham and its 14th Century parish church of St. Nicholas.
Originally a rectory, Saint Nicholas Church was a gift of Peter de Valognes, who came over with the Conqueror William. It is anyones' guess if an Anglo-Saxon church preceded the Norman church on this site but it is known that in the 7th Century Saint Felix introduced Christianity to this area via Babingley and Shernborne. Saint Felix may also have visited Dersingham.
Built of local Carr stone, St. Nicholas is of the Decorated period; inside the church is a chest that survived from this period and has been used to preserve document on the people of this parish. All the nave windows were altered in the Perpendicular period.
With a big entrance doorway and tiny trefoil windows, East and West, the South porch is entirely 15th century Perpendicular period. The four aisle windows and six beautiful clerestory windows on each side are all late Perpendicular, but judging by the North and South period doorways, the walls are basically earlier.
Among architectural interest to the visitor are the ancient 14th Century walls, windows, stained glass and squint, the Gothic pointed arches, handsome tower with six bells, headstops - with a variety of shapes and faces - poppy head pews and octagonal columns.
The front, church chest and gilded rood screen, along with the sedilia and piscina, are all Medieval and are considered special.
St Nicholas has a fine organ and a fine peal of bells too.
