Ballantrae Cemetery

Description: The cemetery/churchyard entrance is off Main street. The main attraction of this burial ground is the Kennedy Mausoleum, or Kennedy Aisle, found in the corner of Main Street and The Vennel but is part of the old burial ground.
The Mausoleum represents a wing that was preserved when the rest of an old parish church here was demolished during the early 19th century. It has a pillar arch and effigy monument to Lord Bargany. (see the memorial of Gilbert Kennedy on this site) The remains form a memorial to the Kennedys of Bargany and consists of the "glorious tombs" popular in the 17th century. Of the original parish church only one wall with a trace of an pointed arch window survives.

Church: Build/construction (1604, Built by Lady Kennedy of Bargany and her family to house the body of her husband, the Laird of Bargany.
Manse built (1736)
Repairs carried out (1777)
New Church was built across the road (1819)
Building demolished with exception of the Mausoleum (1827)
New cemetery, take A77 South from Ballantrae, take first road to right 1/2 mile, cemetery on the right.
